The History of Lacrosse in South Carolina

Many of the American Indian Tribes played lacrosse over 400 years ago in the Southeastern part of what was to become, later, the United States. They called it "Baggataway" which means "Little Brother of War" Games were played over several miles and were used to settle disputes as well as to train warriors. Jean deBreuf, a French missionary, witnessing a game played by the Huron Indians in 1636, thought the sticks used looked like "Croziers" carried by the Bishops of the church and referred to the game, in his journal as "La crosse"..

The mid and late 1800's saw many settlers playing some form of lacrosse but the game took a big step forward toward the game we know today when a Montreal dentist named George Beers set down the first rules in 1867. The field was 200 yards long with no sideline out of bounds and the goals were two upright posts. Twelve men were to be on a team. Within two years there were hundreds of men's club teams playing lacrosse. NYU fielded the first college team in 1867 and in 1882 the Phillips Exeter and Andover Prep schools, in New England, started the first high school boys teams. Rosabelle Sinclair formed the first girls lacrosse team at the Bryn Mawr School, in Baltimore, in 1926.

HISTORY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA LACROSSE LEAGUE ( SCLL)

The South Carolina Chapter of US Lacrosse Board of Directors established the SCLL in the fall of 2001. The purpose was to provide an opportunity for the boys and girls high school lacrosse teams to compete in a league where a year end state champion would be recognized. The first SCLL Tournament was held in Myrtle Beach in May of 2002 for the Boys Division and at Ridgeview High School, in Columbia, for the Girls Division. Four boys and four girls teams competed. The Hilton Head Girls and Boys teams won the first South Carolina High School Lacrosse Championships. The four boys teams were: Hilton Head; Heathwood Hall; Camden Military Academy; and Myrtle Beach Lacrosse Club. The four girls teams were Hilton Head, Heathwood Hall; Ridgeview; and Myrtle Beach Lacrosse Club.

The year 2003 saw a very successful SCLL Tournament held in Hilton Head and once again the Hilton Head High School Boys and Girls walked away with the title after a very competitive struggle. There were eight teams competing that year.
